- According to Study, these jobs are expected to increase by 10% from 2017 to 2024.
- Given that Gallup states that coffee shops are still the fastest growing business in the hospitality industry, it’s likely that the job outlook for these talented coffee gurus will remain stable.
2. Barista Salary and Benefits
- Study reported that the median hourly wage for these positions in 2015 was $9.24. The annual median income is $19,230, however, this does not factor in tips.
- These roles are considered retail service positions, and as such, are paid hourly and not by salary.
- The work setting can vary, from a coffee shop or coffee bar to a food truck, cafeteria or even a department store.
3. Education and Training Requirements
- Must fully understand the art of coffee. They must be knowledgeable about bean types, brew techniques, and know numerous coffee and espresso recipes.
- Skilled in creating complicated designs with the foam found on the top of a coffee drink.
- Have special training in how to prepare these drinks, for example, an Espresso is a difficult beverage to perfect.
- They must also have at least a high school degree. However, because of the complexity and intelligence required to become effective in this role, some have more advanced degrees. Many times you’ll find a college student working in a local coffee shop part-time.

We are seeking a customer-oriented Barista. Knowledge of coffee beans and brews is preferred for this role; however, we will also train you in the specific techniques and recipes that make our brand as delicious as the beverages we serve.
Your job is to pleasantly greet customers and take orders, then create the espresso drinks our customers crave. Let your inner artist come out by creating gorgeous foam designs to top off the tasty brews. Serving our customers efficiently and perfectly every time is a requirement of this role.
A clean, neat appearance is just as important as a sanitary, immaculate serving area. You will be tasked with keeping your serving station clean and up to health code. You will learn to successfully operate the industrial coffee grinders, brewers, steamers, and espresso machines that power our shop. You will also learn how to take apart and reassemble these machines for cleaning. You will be comfortable standing for long periods and able to lift up to 25-pounds.
Responsibilities will include carefully listening to customers and fulfilling their orders promptly. You should engage customers in a pleasant conversation whenever possible. Your goal will be, first and foremost, to serve our customers in the most efficient and effective way in order to increase sales.
You will learn our food and beverage products inside and out, along with staying on-top of sales and promotions, such as our customer loyalty program. You will help promote our products by keeping the store clean and neat, stocking products and engaging in cleaning as necessary, including restrooms and the kitchen prep area. You will maintain store security to comply with all corporate policies and procedures.
In this position, you will also learn our proprietary point-of-sale computer system. You will close the successful customer experience by completing the sale, making change, and plating or serving their food. In some cases, you may assist the manager in nightly cash outs and register balancing.
You will be able to memorize educational information such as the type of bean we’ve brewed or ingredients to specific recipes. Your mission is to create the best possible customer service experience while guiding visitors toward food and beverages purchases that help our company meet quarterly sales goals.
Responsibilities

Required Qualifications
Educational
- High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.
Technical Skills
- Can roast coffee beans to create great coffee.
- Familiar with different coffee blends.
- Able to operate industrial coffee grinders and setting grinder blades depending on the coffee bean for fineness and coarseness.
- Ability to have consistent shot sizes every time.
- Able to use steamers to froth and steam milk that is consistent.
- Able to operate industrial coffee brewers.
- Ability to effectively operate an espresso machine.
- Able to use a point-of-sale register and can make change accurately and efficiently handle money.
- Having skills in Barista art skills is a plus.
Communication/Organizational
- Ability to handle a diverse array of multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Efficient and fast on their feet. Able to handle the pressure of creating and serving complicated beverages in front of a line of impatient customers.
- Able to memorize a high number of blended coffee recipes, with the ability to communicate them quickly to a customer.
- An excellent latte artist; able to create pleasing foam images on the top of a beverage.
- Excellent ability to communicate with people with a pleasing outgoing demeanor.
- Exceptional people skills and a pleasant, professional demeanor even when customers are not polite.
